Mission

Pediatric AIDS/HIV Care, Inc.’s guiding principle is to support children and their families living with HIV/AIDS in the Washington, DC area. Each year, we serve over 150 children and adults.  We strive to reduce the isolation, stress, and stigma of living with HIV/AIDS, to build the social, communication, and coping skills of both parents and children so they can thrive.

We are the only organization in the DC area devoted exclusively to vital support services for children and adolescents living with HIV/AIDS.  Our comprehensive range of psychosocial services is designed in response to the complex needs and wishes of the person. We are especially focused on supporting young people orphaned and affected by HIV/AIDS. The children and adolescents who have priority for enrollment are those with an imminent or recent AIDS-related loss

Mission

Founded in 1987 as a simple buddy program for ‘AIDS babies’ in a local church, our work began quite simply and selflessly – volunteers rocked and cradled babies because their own mothers were too sick from AIDS to care for them.

From this community, grass-roots effort, PAHC has evolved and matured to meet the ever changing demands of the epidemic.

We recognize and understand the needs of children who have experienced traumatic loss, and we have developed the knowledge, practice and the infrastructure to serve and support them.

PAHC is the only organization in the metropolitan Washington area that specializes exclusively in these vital support services in response to the complex needs of children infected and affected by HIV/AIDS.

CINDY KIM
Clinical Director

Cindy Kim provides mental health therapy to our children and adolescent clients as well as to their caregivers.  She has worked in the field of HIV/AIDS in Washington, DC for the past three years.  Prior to her arrival at Pediatric Care, she worked as an adult HIV case manager at Georgetown University Hospital and was an active member of the DC Case Management Operating Committee.  Although Cindy thoroughly enjoyed the rich relationships she developed with her adult clients at Georgetown, she is overjoyed to be working once again with her first love, children and teens.  Cindy comes to us with a background in mental health therapy for children exposed to domestic violence, crisis intervention during pediatric hospitalizations, and 6 years working with Double “H” Hole in the Woods Ranch camp for children battling chronic illness and muscular disorders.

Cindy’s philosophy on mental health therapy is rooted in the strengths perspective, ecological systems, and the social work mantra, “start where the client is.”  As such, she employs various therapy techniques, depending on the inclination of the client, including play, art, talk, photo, and cooking.

Cindy received her B.A. from Bowdoin College in Government and her Master’s in Social Work from Columbia University.  Outside the Wright House, Cindy is an avid knitter, runner, volleyball spiker, and passionate yogi.  On June 29, 2008, Cindy will be a fully-fledged yoga instructor and is eager to incorporate yoga into future therapeutic endeavors!
